An officer in the small city of Haines City, Florida, ran a red light. He was on his way to lunch making a left turn when the light turned red. After seeing video evidence of his “crime” Officer Tim Glover turned himself in to his boss and wrote himself a ticket. Glover wants people to know most cops are honest and do the right thing, and they’re willing to pay the price if they make a mistake on a lunch break.

Research on vegetables and aging gives moms another reason to say “I told you so.” The research found that eating vegetables appears to help keep the brain young and may slow the mental decline sometimes associated with growing old. On measures of mental sharpness, older people who ate more than two servings of vegetables daily appeared about five years younger at the end of the six-year study than those who ate few or no vegetables.

A waitress at a Greenville South Carolina Cracker Barrel said she felt “humiliated” and “heartbroken” by a “tip” that came in note form. The note said, “The woman’s place is in the home.” Renee, the server, said the couple she served appeared to be in their mid-50s and a note was left instead of cash. The note thanked Renee for her “excellent service,” but went on to tell her that her “place is in the home” and her working is a “disgrace” to her husband’s “manhood” and the reason he “must see another woman on his way home.”

A 13-year-old girl had to tell her Florida music teacher that a raccoon was to blame for her missing homework. She explained that the raccoon fell from the ceiling in her bathroom and ran into her bedroom. Animal control then came out to get the raccoon and when they couldn’t catch it, they said she couldn’t go in her room. The girl’s grandmother vouched for her story, telling school officials she couldn’t get to her homework or her books. The raccoon was eventually caught.

Chris Tomlin, Christian worship leader and Grammy and Dove award-winning music artist, has written songs that are sung by more people on a weekly basis than any other songwriter in the world. The BBC is lining up a new series of “slow television” shows after nearly a million people tuned in to documentary that featured nothing more than two hours of footage captured from the front of a bus traveling around a national park in Northern England. This summer, France made a big, bold step to combat email addiction. In France it’s actually illegal now to work on email on weekends if your company has over 50 employees. Speaking of work... it's Time to let your boss know: A study shows employees function best in a three-day work week. A Japanese researcher analyzed the employment habits and cognitive test scores for 3,000 Australian men and 3,500 women, all over the age of 40. They found working 25 hours per week achieved the best test scores. Yeah, good luck with that.

Police in a Maine town (Westbrook) are warning the public that a large snake spotted earlier this summer may still be around after a large snakeskin was found near a boat launch. In a Facebook post, police say: “Until the type of snake is determined and we can assess the safety risk, we caution people who recreate along the Presumpscot River to remain alert, maintain a safe distance from any wildlife, and report any sightings of the snake to the Westbrook Police Department.” • IMAGE

Touch ID from Apple is a great way to safeguard your device, and a newly filed patent suggests it will also be able to help catch thieves. The patent, named ‘biometric capture for unauthorized user identification,’ is pretty straightforward. If Touch ID detects a fingerprint that isn’t yours, it’ll store an image of the scan as a means of catching who may have stolen your phone. It may also take their picture, or a video of them trying to hack your device.

Acoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton thinks he’s found the “quietest square inch in the United States.” It’s marked by a red pebble that he placed on a log in a corner of the Hoh Rainforest in Olympic National Park in western Washington State. The area is actually full of sounds, but the sounds are natural — by quietest, Hempton means that this point is subject to less human-made noise pollution than any other spot in the American wilderness.

A study shows working long hours has a greater negative impact on women than men because it makes them more likely to eat unhealthy foods, drink unhealthy amounts of coffee and smoke. Most of the 543 university students involved in the analysis didn’t bother to read the terms of service before signing up for a fake social networking site called “NameDrop” that the students believed was real. A women in Melbourne, Australia went into labor early, the dad-to-be ordered an Uber to take them to hospital, rather than wait for an ambulance.
